Case Study: Passivhaus-Inspired Contemporary New Build – Watermead

Overview
This project replaced a dated 1970s bungalow with poor environmental performance, transforming the site into a highly energy-efficient, contemporary residence inspired by Passivhaus principles. The design prioritises strategic orientation, passive solar gain, and superior insulation, setting a new benchmark for sustainable, modern living.

Design Vision & Client Goals
Working closely with the client, our objective was clear:

  • Deliver a streamlined contemporary home

  • Optimize budget efficiency without compromising on design quality

  • Use high-grade materials and finishes to ensure lasting value

The home’s rectangular floor plan was deliberately chosen to simplify construction, enabling a premium finish while maintaining cost-effectiveness.

Architectural Features

  • Double-height entrance hall with ridge skylight for dramatic natural light

  • Bespoke concrete staircase and elevated bridge with stainless steel railings and limestone steps – an architectural centerpiece

  • Rear elevation with sloping glazed roof, extending into a single-story zone for seamless garden connection

  • Lightweight aluminium solar shading, engineered to:

    • Reduce summer overheating

    • Allow low winter sun to flood interiors for passive heating

Sustainability & Energy Performance

  • High-performance insulation to exceed regulatory standards

  • Advanced thermal design for minimal heat loss

  • Solar strategies integrated with architectural form for year-round comfort

Outcome
The Watermead residence embodies efficiency, simplicity, and elegance, delivering a striking home that performs as beautifully as it looks.
