Case Study: Historical Stone Restoration – Boston Spa

This Grade II listed property in Boston Spa required a full restoration of its external building envelope, with particular focus on the roof covering and stone façade.

Careful Stonework Restoration

Our team meticulously removed the existing mortar and repointed the entire façade using a carefully blended lime mortar to maintain the building’s authentic character. Areas of degraded limestone walling were cut out and replaced with hand-selected stone sourced from a Cotswolds quarry for a perfect material and tonal match.

Where flat stone arches had failed, we crafted and installed new axed limestone pieces to replicate the original detailing. Arches that were structurally sound but weathered were repaired in situ using a combination of precision morticing, concealed heli-bar reinforcement set in epoxy resin, and colour-matched repair mortar – leaving the repairs virtually invisible.

Roof Renewal with Heritage Sensitivity

The existing Westmorland slate roof had reached the end of its life, so we stripped the roof back completely, installed modern felt and battens, and reslated using reclaimed Welsh slate. This ensured the roof not only performs to modern standards but also retains its traditional aesthetic.

Result: A seamless restoration that protects the property for generations to come while celebrating its historic charm.
